European Tourism Seasonality 2026: LSG Research Note on Peak vs Quiet Months

|

LSG Research Note 01 · September 2026

European tourism continues to grow, but the distribution of demand across the year remains highly uneven. For independent hotels and other accommodation businesses, that distinction matters: a growing tourism market does not automatically remove the commercial problem of weak dates.

LSG Peak-to-Trough Concentration Gap across selected European tourism markets
Low Season Growth analysis based on Eurostat 2025 tourism accommodation data.

Key findings

  • EU tourist accommodation recorded nearly 3.1 billion nights in 2025, up 2.2% from 2024.
  • 31.1% of annual EU tourism nights were concentrated in July and August.
  • August alone accounted for about 501 million nights, compared with 139 million in January: roughly 3.6 times as many.
  • The first half of 2026 reached 1.321 billion nights, up 1.7% from the same period in 2025.
  • Foreign visitors represented 48.9% of EU accommodation nights in the first half of 2026.

These figures point to a useful commercial distinction: tourism demand can expand at the European level while individual destinations and properties still face large seasonal gaps.

The LSG Peak-to-Trough Concentration Gap

To make the seasonality difference easier to compare, Low Season Growth calculated a simple descriptive metric from Eurostat’s 2025 country table:

Peak-to-Trough Concentration Gap = share of annual nights in the two busiest months − share of annual nights in the two slowest months.

This is an LSG calculation based on Eurostat data. It is not an official Eurostat indicator, a forecast or a performance benchmark for an individual property.

Country 2 busiest months 2 slowest months LSG gap
Croatia 54.5% 1.4% 53.1 pp
France 36.0% 8.3% 27.7 pp
Italy 34.5% 7.7% 26.8 pp
Cyprus 29.8% 3.8% 26.0 pp
Latvia 29.1% 10.3% 18.8 pp
Lithuania 24.5% 13.2% 11.3 pp

What the gap tells us

The gap does not tell us whether a hotel is performing well or badly. It tells us how concentrated national accommodation demand is around peak months relative to the weakest months.

Croatia is an extreme example: more than half of annual accommodation nights were recorded in July and August, while the two slowest months together represented only 1.4%. Italy and France show less extreme but still meaningful concentration. Lithuania is much more evenly distributed by this measure.

Growth does not remove seasonality

Eurostat reported that EU tourism nights increased again in 2025, and the first half of 2026 also remained above the previous year. That is encouraging for the sector, but aggregate growth can coexist with very weak individual periods.

For an independent property, the relevant question is therefore not simply “is tourism growing?” It is “which dates remain structurally difficult for this property, which guest segments can travel then, and which commercial channels can reach them?”

Commercial implications for independent hotels

1. Diagnose dates, not just seasons. A national market can be highly seasonal while a particular city, micro-destination or property has different weak periods. Work from actual booking pace and occupancy gaps.

2. Separate price from demand creation. A weak period does not always require a lower rate. It may require a different segment, use case, package, booking condition or distribution route.

3. Start earlier than the weak month. Corporate, group and partnership demand often requires prospecting and follow-up before the stay period. A 30–90 day commercial calendar is more useful than last-minute promotion alone.

4. Use international demand selectively. Foreign guests represented almost half of EU accommodation nights in the first half of 2026, but the share differs dramatically by country. Targeting should reflect the actual source markets of the destination.

5. Measure the commercial process. Track qualified accounts contacted, replies, proposals, direct enquiries, bookings and margin. Occupancy alone does not explain which actions worked.

Methodology and limitations

The Peak-to-Trough Concentration Gap shown above is calculated by Low Season Growth from Eurostat’s 2025 table on the share of annual tourist-accommodation nights in the two busiest and two slowest months. Selected countries are shown to illustrate different levels of seasonality; this is not a complete country ranking.

Eurostat’s tourist-accommodation statistics cover accommodation establishments, not only independent hotels. National patterns should not be interpreted as forecasts for a specific property. The 2026 first-half figures are used only to describe the direction of aggregate EU demand, not to estimate full-year seasonality.
