European Short-Stay Demand Is Still Growing — But the Pace Is Slowing

LSG Data-Led Insight · 6 October 2026

European short-stay demand booked through major online platforms is still growing, but the latest Eurostat release shows a slower pace than earlier in the year.

What changed

  • Guests spent 258.8 million nights in EU short-term rental accommodation booked through Airbnb, Booking or Expedia in Q2 2026.
  • That was +5.3% year on year, equal to +13.1 million nights versus Q2 2025.
  • Compared with Q2 2024, guest nights were +23.9%, or +50.0 million nights.
  • In Q1 2026, the same Eurostat series had grown by +9.7% year on year. The year-on-year growth rate therefore slowed by 4.4 percentage points between Q1 and Q2.

Growth is uneven across destinations

Eurostat reports large differences between countries in Q2 2026. Malta recorded the strongest increase at +25.0%, followed by Slovakia at +17.0%, Slovenia at +12.9% and Romania at +11.4%.

Among the seven most-visited EU countries in this dataset, Poland grew by +8.9%, Greece by +8.3%, Italy by +8.1%, Germany by +6.5%, France by +6.2%, Portugal by +2.6% and Spain by +1.9%.

Four countries in the wider Eurostat coverage recorded declines: Iceland -4.5%, Austria -3.0%, Cyprus -2.4% and Hungary -2.0%.

Regional signals from Q1 2026

The new release also adds regional NUTS 2 evidence for Q1 2026. Canarias and Rhône-Alpes each recorded 8.8 million platform-booked guest nights, while Andalucía recorded 8.3 million. Five of the ten most-visited regions were in Spain, three in France and two in Italy.

What this means for Low Season Growth

The signal is not that platform demand is falling. It is still expanding. The useful point is that aggregate growth is slowing while destination performance remains highly uneven.

For an independent hotel, that reinforces a practical rule: do not use an EU-wide tourism headline as proof that a weak date should fill itself. Check the demand environment around the property — source markets, destination access, competing accommodation supply, channel visibility and the specific dates being targeted.

Where platform-booked short-stay demand is growing strongly, it can indicate active destination demand or competition for the same traveller. Where growth is weak or negative, a hotel may need a more deliberate reason-to-travel, partner or direct-sales strategy.

Important limitation

This Eurostat series covers holiday rentals and other short-stay accommodation booked through Airbnb, Booking and Expedia. Eurostat explicitly states that it excludes hotels and campsites and that, because of possible overlaps, these figures cannot be added to general tourist-accommodation statistics.

The data should therefore be treated as a channel and destination-demand signal, not as a direct measure of hotel occupancy or hotel bookings.

How LSG uses this evidence

This release extends the LSG Global Low-Season Evidence Map 2026 with a separate platform-demand layer. It does not revise the core figures in LSG Research Note 02, because the underlying accommodation scope is different.
